All abilities and upgrades in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond — a complete guide

Want to learn about all the upgrades and abilities in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond ? Samus Aran’s journey across the planet Vyuros will naturally lead her to ancient structures and vast biomes. While exploring these areas, you’re sure to earn a few power-ups. Our guide has all the details you need: we’ll list the abilities earned during the campaign in chronological order. Be warned: minor spoilers follow.

Psi-crystal

  • Location : Obtained from the Chrono Tower at the very beginning of the campaign.
  • Effect : This is the first ability in Metroid Prime 4 , unlocked immediately after the prologue. It allows you to switch to the Psi-Visor (X button) and fire the Psi-Beam (A or ZR buttons).

Psi-Glove

  • Location : Found on a pedestal in Furious Green.
  • Effect : Allows you to capture and move Psi Particles and related objects. To do this, hold down the ZL button and move the right stick.

Rocket launcher

  • Location : Found in the Furious Green in the same area where you rescue Mackenzie.
  • Effect : Allows you to launch a rocket (R button).

Note : Ammo can be replenished by picking up ammo or resting at save points. It’s also worth finding Missile Extensions to increase your maximum ammo.

Control beam

  • Location : Found in the Furious Green immediately after the encounter on the bridge. This area later becomes your base camp for the zone.
  • Effect : Charge the Psi Beam (hold A or ZR) and then control the projectile with the Right Stick.

Psi-bomb

  • Location : Reward for defeating the Karvex boss in the Furious Green.
  • Effect : This ability in Metroid Prime 4 has several uses when transforming into the Morph Ball (Y button):
    • You can plant bomb charges that explode after a delay. To do this, press the A button.
    • You can also hold the A button to generate a Psi Particle. Then, by activating the Psi Visor, you can capture and throw this particle at the devices.

Vi-O-La costume

  • Location : Obtainable from Tower 1 of the Voltaic Forge after power is restored.
  • Effect : Allows you to control the Vi-O-La motorcycle. Press the start button to instantly materialize the vehicle.

Psi-boots

  • Location : Reward for defeating the boss Xelios in the Voltaic Forge.
  • Effect : Allows you to double jump and jump onto psi-platforms.

Fire Chip / Fire Shot

  • Location : The Fire Chip can be found in an abandoned transporter in the Burning Lake. Afterwards, return to the base camp in the Furious Green to have Mackenzie transform it into the Fire Shot.
  • Effect : Press down on the D-pad to switch to the Flame Shot. This ammo type sets targets on fire and melts obstacles.

Note : The Flame Shot is the first of several elemental weapons you’ll find in the game. Collecting Shot Extensions will increase your maximum ammo capacity.

Psi-lasso

  • Location : Found in the Biolabs in the Ice Belt.
  • Effect : This ability in Metroid Prime 4 allows you to pull objects toward you. Hold down the ZL button, then press and pull the left stick down.

Psi-accelerator ball

  • Location : Reward for defeating the Keratos boss in the Ice Belt.
  • Effect : The Psi Acceleration Ball offers several useful functions. It’s activated by holding the B button while in Morph Ball form:
    • Get a speed boost when you release the button.
  • Starts rotating mechanisms.
  • Creates momentum when moving along half pipes.
  • Allows movement along materialized psi-accelerator rails.

Ice Chip / Ice Shot

  • Location : Upon returning to the surface of the Ice Belt, you’ll see a cutscene focusing on a capsule on the ceiling. Use the Control Beam to open the door on the other side, then activate the terminal with the Psi Accelerator Ball.
  • Effect : Take the chip to Mackenzie to transform it into Ice Shot. It can temporarily freeze enemies and stop magma and lava flows.

Vi-O-La Ice Suit

  • Location : After exploring the Ice Belt for the first time, return to Tower 3 of the Voltaic Forge. Use the Psi-Accelerator Ball on the rotating mechanism to unlock this upgrade.
  • Effect : Allows the Vi-O-La motorcycle to hover over lava flows. Essentially, this allows exploration of the rest of the Burning Lake region.

Psi-hook

  • Location : You receive this reward for defeating the boss Fenoros in the Burning Lake.
  • Effect : Aim at grapple points and press the ZL button to swing. You can also hang from grapple points.

 

Thunder Chip

  • Location : After obtaining the Psi Hook, return to Voltaic Forge Tower 1 – Collapsed Ladder. Follow the path until you see a room with dozens of generators. This item is located in the back-left generator compartment. Be prepared to fight a variant of Sylax once you pick it up.
  • Effect : Like other elemental shots, the chip must be delivered to Mackenzie to unlock the function. This shot shocks enemies, stunning them, and can also be used to power devices and doors

Psi-Spider Ball

  • Location : Obtaining this ability upgrade in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond can be a bit of a challenge.

    • You’ll need all the upgrades mentioned above. Then, return to the Ice Belt Lobby and use Thunder Shot on the doorway.
    • In the equipment storage area, stun the sleeping mech with a Thunderbolt Shot. He’ll introduce himself as VUE-995.
    • Scan obstacles and passages so VUE can smash them to pieces. Eventually, you’ll reach a cliff.
    • Use the Psi Hook to cross the gap and you will soon find yourself in the Ancient Temple.
    • Use your Psi powers to throw two Psi Particles into the indentations in the statue. This will unlock the Psi Spider Ball ability.
  • Effect : While in Morph Ball form, hold the ZL button near purple rails or attachment points. This allows you to magnetize and move along the rails or launch yourself higher from the attachment points.
