Creative Zen Hybrid SXFI Wireless Headphones Review – Comfortable Fit, Great Sound

The Creative Zen Hybrid wireless headphone lineup includes four models: the Zen Hybrid SXFI, Zen Hybrid Pro SXFI, Zen Hybrid Pro, and Zen Hybrid 2. The most affordable of these is the Creative Zen Hybrid SXFI: it lacks an external microphone and an expanded set of codecs, but it does support holographic spatial sound and high-quality noise cancellation. We’ll cover this device in more detail in this review.

Equipment and design

The Creative Zen Hybrid SXFI is packaged in an oversized cardboard box featuring an image of the headset and a list of icons highlighting its key features: active noise cancellation, Bluetooth and 3.5mm connectivity, up to 70 hours of battery life, and more. Information about the SXFI’s surround sound support is also included.

The model is placed inside on a plastic backing. Included in the package are a pair of cables (USB for charging and 3.5 mm for wired connection), a user manual, and a thick fabric pouch for storing and transporting the headphones.

The latter emphasizes the device’s purpose, complementing the swivel-fold design, which allows the Creative Zen Hybrid SXFI to be compactly folded and stowed in a bag or backpack . This makes it a headset for walking and traveling —lightweight, compact, comfortable, and wireless.

The model is available in two colors: black and white; we’re reviewing the latter. The earcups and the top of the headband are made of matte, slightly rough-touch plastic that resists fingerprints. The inside of the headband is covered in eco-leather with soft padding. The ear pads are made of the same material. The 40mm drivers are covered with fabric inserts that bear the designations for the right and left earcups.

The left earcup has no controls, just a USB-C charging port, a battery indicator, and a pair of microphones (there are five microphones spread throughout the body, providing better voice pickup and noise cancellation). The right earcup houses the SXFI key, the ANC key, status LEDs, microphones, a 3.5mm jack, a power key, and volume controls.

The Creative Zen Hybrid SXFI lacks backlighting and features no eye-catching accents—just the brand logo and SXFI technology on the headband. While some may find the design lacking in variety, this solution is more practical and appealing to a wider range of users.

Connection and setup

The word “Hybrid” in the model name signifies its hybrid connection—wireless via Bluetooth 5.3 and wired via a 3.5mm AUX input. Only AAC and SBC codecs are available for wireless connection; for a more advanced set of codecs, consider headsets like the Creative Zen Hybrid Pro and Creative Zen Hybrid Pro SXFI, which support LC3+, LC3, AAC, and SBC. However, this basic set is sufficient for most undemanding users.

Many of the device’s buttons have dual functions. For example, a single press of the ANC button cycles through noise-canceling modes (off, transparency mode, hybrid noise-canceling, and active noise-canceling), a double press activates low-latency mode, and holding the button for two seconds launches your voice assistant (Siri and Google Assistant are supported). Meanwhile, the power button also pauses tracks and answers calls, and the volume buttons skip tracks.

You can configure the headphones using the Creative App. The software offers a limited number of settings: you can enable SXFI, select an equalizer preset or create your own, activate noise cancellation, enable low-latency mode, and check for firmware updates.

SXFI configuration is accomplished using a dedicated utility called the SXFI App. It enables head mapping: the app uses a smartphone camera to scan the user’s head, both frontally and in profile, and, based on this data, creates a personalized sound profile that simulates spatial sound, similar to a multi-speaker setup.

Impressions of use

The Creative Zen Hybrid SXFI offers a very comfortable fit. Their light weight, combined with soft ear cushions and an extendable headband, ensures comfortable wearing regardless of hairstyle or headwear.

The sound quality is quite impressive. Solid bass, smooth mids, and clear highs are present. At maximum volume, the highs become a bit harsh, but this is expected for mid-range headphones. The volume and positioning are near perfect; with this headset, you can immerse yourself in concert recordings or headbang to a lush beat with equal pleasure.

The SXFI surround sound system is suitable for watching movies and listening to music, and in some scenes it truly creates an immersive experience that’s impossible to achieve with a standard stereo setup. For example, if you enjoy orchestral music, SXFI will make you feel like you’re literally at the concert. However, sometimes the technology doesn’t work as intended, can emphasize echoes, or struggle with multichannel sound. Therefore, it’s not always appropriate to use it.

The headphones have very decent noise cancellation. You can turn off noise cancellation completely, enable maximum and adaptive noise cancellation, and even activate ambient mode, which lets you hear not only the music in the headphones but also everything going on around you. The noise cancellation is well-balanced, and with several available modes, you can choose the one that suits your preference.

With five built-in microphones, the Creative Zen Hybrid SXFI delivers high-quality voice capture during headset calls. During calls, people commented that my voice sounded clear and unobtrusive, though some noise could still be heard in strong winds.

As for battery life, the model boasts up to 70 hours of battery life without ANC and up to 40 hours with noise cancellation enabled. These aren’t record-breaking figures, but they’re perfectly acceptable for this price range.

Conclusion

The Creative Zen Hybrid SXFI are excellent wireless headphones for everyday use. Among their advantages are a foldable design, high-quality sound, very good noise cancellation, and decent battery life. Furthermore, they are one of the only models with spatial audio support in the sub-10,000-ruble segment.

The device’s drawbacks include a lack of advanced codecs and ear pads that aren’t ideal for hot weather. But otherwise, the headset performs admirably. Whether or not to choose it is entirely up to you.

Pros
  • Neat design
  • Folding design
  • High-quality sound
  • Excellent noise cancellation
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No high quality codecs
  • The ear pads can be a bit hot
