Hytale Gets New Undead Summoning Weapon, But Early Access Still Limited

I may have missed the original Minecraft era, but I’m not about to make the same mistake with Hytale—it’s taken up most of my playtime over the past two weeks. It’s a good project, albeit largely unfinished, but updates are coming slowly, and I really enjoyed the new Necromancy Grimoire in the latest patch.

Progression remains a bit stagnant for now, as Hytale’s developers slowly prepare updates for Early Access. However, Grimoire: Reborn Embers is exactly what I’d like to see, even if it feels a bit weak. This fancy book lets you summon hordes of undead to attack enemies and relieve pressure on the player. Well, I said “hordes,” but you have a limited number of pages to work with. When fully charged, it’s more like a small skeletal unit.

You can find the Grimoire: Reborn Embers in Zone 4 as a drop from Charred Skeletal Praetorians. It’s not a guaranteed drop, so you might want to use the pages wisely. In my brief testing, the grimoire only seemed to work with Bone Piles—a type of furniture—and not with Bone Shards.

The Skeleton Summoning Tome expands on the necromancy mechanic that caused panic on the Hytale subreddit last week after some players assumed a few weak skeletons represented the game’s entire magic system. This turned out to be untrue, and Hypixel CEO Simon Collins-Laflamme clarified the matter:

“It’s just a random fun item drop, it will evolve over time.”

Thank goodness, because several of the allies I summoned were burned alive before the enemy even bothered to attack. Simon pitched this update as another opportunity for modders to explore the full creative potential of Hytale’s sandbox. This makes sense, as we’ve seen numerous Hytale mods released on day one, and the CurseForge library already boasts over 3,000 mods in less than two weeks.

Other features added in Hytale Update 2

As for other changes in Hytale’s second patch, there are a handful of new cosmetic items and accessory options available to everyone, regardless of the game version. Since they mentioned Vampire Fangs as part of the customization drops, I had to check out what all these new items look like. Here they are :

Cosmetics and skeletal minions are the most noticeable additions, but you can check out the Hytale blog for a more detailed list of changes. If you’re interested in some of the smaller details that caught my eye, here’s a quick list:

– Armor slot visibility switch.

– Bison, boars, cows, horses, and warthogs now drop Medium Hide.

– Lower tier pickaxes are now less effective at mining high tier ore.

– You can now use Shift+LMB to equip armor if the slot is empty.

– Hot keys Q/E/R/T for inventory management (put all, take all, quick stack, sort).

– Player markers are displayed on the compass.

– More decorative light sources are now available on the furniture workbench.

– Ophidiophobia mode for players afraid of snakes.

AI: Despite the modest scope of the update, the very fact that such an ambitious and long-awaited project as Hytale is receiving regular patches is a good sign. The emphasis on modding tools is particularly encouraging, as this could be key to the game’s longevity. However, the core content and depth of the game’s systems remain questionable, and fans will likely need to be patient.
