How to Get Pets in Heartopia: Adoption and Care Guide

In the cozy simulation game Heartopia, you’ll master a variety of hobbies, including those related to pet adoption and care . These include “Cat Grooming” and “Dog Grooming,” which allow you to bring home a four-legged friend and even teach them tricks!

But before we get ahead of ourselves, you first need to adopt someone. To help with that, this guide explains in detail how to get pets in Heartopia .

How to unlock pets in Heartopia

To get your first pet in Heartopia, you’ll first need to reach level 12 in the DG Members Guild. At this point, the game will prompt you to speak with Mrs. Joan about the “Cat Grooming” hobby at the pet store in the city center. After speaking with her, you’ll need to give her a Hobby Expansion Ticket to officially unlock “Cat Grooming.”

Unfortunately, you have no choice but to start with cats, but right after that you can unlock the Dog Care hobby!

Once you reach DG Member Level 12, you can head to Mrs. Joan’s Pet Shop to learn both hobbies. | XD/Eurogamer

For us personally, reaching DG Member Guild Level 12 took four consecutive days of play, so don’t be surprised if it takes you a couple of days or more to finally start caring for cats and dogs in the game.

After unlocking the “Cat Care” hobby, talk to Mrs. Joan again to begin the adoption process. She’ll offer you the option to adopt a cat first and give you the task of choosing from the selection in the store. The selection includes three different breeds of cats or dogs, and the available animals are updated daily.

Once you find a cat (or dog) you’re ready to adopt, click “Adopt,” name it, and talk to Mrs. Joan again. Your new pet will be sent home!

After adopting your first cat, you can talk to Mrs. Joan about adopting a dog. Fortunately, the process is exactly the same as adopting a cat.

You’ll need to give Mrs. Joan another Hobby Expansion Ticket to unlock the “Dog Grooming” hobby, then choose one of the dogs from the shop. Once adopted, it will be sent to your home, just like the cats!

How to get more pets in Heartopia

To get more pets in Heartopia , you need to level up the “Cat Grooming” and “Dog Grooming” hobbies. The option to adopt a new dog or cat will unlock once you reach the following levels:

  • Cat Care Level 1 – First Cat.
  • Cat Care Level 2 – Second Cat.
  • Cat Care Level 5 – Third Cat.
  • Cat Care Level 7 – Fourth Cat.
  • Cat Care Level 9 – Fifth Cat.
  • Dog Grooming Level 1 – First Dog.
  • Dog Grooming Level 4 – Second Dog.
  • Dog Grooming Level 8 – Third Dog.

As you can see from the list, at the time of writing, there are a total of five cats and three dogs available for adoption in Heartopia . To level up your hobby and ultimately adopt more pets, you’ll need to spend time caring for the ones you already have.

How to care for pets in Heartopia

Caring for pets in Heartopia is very similar to caring for wild animals you might encounter in the city. Ideally, you should interact with them daily—at a minimum, petting and feeding them. Just like with wild animals, you can also exercise them and give them their favorite food. If you’re lucky, your pets might even leave you gifts as a token of their gratitude!

Don’t forget to spend time with your pets every day and take care of them in Hartopia .

Besides petting and feeding them, you can also bathe your pets, play with them, or buy furniture for them at the Pet Shop (accessible by talking to Mrs. Joan). Here, you can create a special place for your pets by purchasing a bed, cat tree, and other accessories.

Once you’ve bonded enough with your pet, you can teach both cats and dogs tricks. What’s more, you can take your dogs on walks as you explore the world of Hartopia !
