Adaptations in Subnautica 2 function as permanent upgrades essential for story progression. They aren’t regular equipment or craftable modules. Instead, they alter the character’s biology, allowing them to adapt and survive in new environments, interact with alien systems, and advance the storyline.
In the current Early Access version, the primary adaptations are tied to large plant structures called Angel Comb Jellies. Four adaptations are currently known: pressure tolerance, digestion, heat tolerance, and Axum vision.
How Adaptations Work in Subnautica 2
Adaptations in Subnautica 2 are permanent biological enhancements that help the character survive and progress through the vast underwater world of Proteus. They are primarily unlocked by interacting with Angel Ctenophora—large organic structures encountered during the story and exploration of the world .
Some Angel Comb Jellies are immediately accessible and can be interacted with without any special requirements or tools. Others are blocked by Blight Growths—glowing, infected growths attached to tentacles around the Angel Comb Jellie. To gain adaptation, you must first clear the structure by destroying all the Blight Blooms.
In Survival mode, adaptations are unlocked gradually as you progress. In Creative mode, they are available without the usual Survival restrictions , right from the start of the game.
There are four known adaptations in the current Early Access version. Each one changes the conditions the character can withstand, what they can digest, and what technologies they can interact with.
Adaptation #1 – Pressure Resistance
- Effect : You’ve learned to breathe air under pressure. Your character no longer uses up oxygen unless submerged in water.
- Where to open : in the prologue, before you go up to the surface in the escape pod .
Adaptation #2 – Digestion
- Effect : Allows you to digest local flora and fauna – feed on fish and plants.
- Where to open : About 180 meters north or northeast of the escape pod, next to Anita’s black box. You’ll end up here as part of the story, so you’re unlikely to miss it.
Adaptation #3 – Resistance to Overheating
- Effect : allows to withstand significantly higher temperatures.
- Where to open : About 200 meters northwest of the escape pod, next to Vander’s black box.
Adaptation #4 – Axumite Vision
- Effect : You can now use Aksumite devices. On sa
- Where to open : About 1800 meters east of the escape pod, behind the Alien Base.
How to unlock pressure resistance
Pressure Resistance is the first adaptation in Subnautica 2, tied to the beginning of the game. You don’t need to find a separate biome or craft a tool. Start the game in normal mode. Complete the prologue. Reach the habitat before exiting the escape pod. Receive the Pressure Resistance adaptation before departure.
This adaptation allows the character to breathe air under very high pressure. In practice, this means that in certain sealed spaces not filled with water, you won’t expend any oxygen.
How to open digestion
Digestion is the first major adaptation you’ll gain on the Angel Jelly after reaching the open ocean . It allows you to digest local plants and creatures, making it essential for early survival and adequate food supply.
Start from the escape pod. Swim approximately 180 meters north or northeast. Follow the route to Anita’s black box recording. Find the Angel Ctenophora. Interact with the pink bulb to obtain the “Digestion” adaptation.
How to unlock overheat resistance
Heat tolerance is one of the most important adaptations, as it allows you to safely explore hot zones. Without it, farming resources like gold and sulfur will be much more difficult.
First, open and craft the Sonic Resonator. Head to the infected Angel Ctenophora near the location of Wander’s Black Box. Follow the large tentacles extending from the central structure. Clear the blight growths on both tentacle routes using the Sonic Resonator.
After clearing, return to the Angel Comb Jelly’s central chamber . Interact with the opening structure to gain Heat Resistance.
How to cleanse pestilence
Blight Warts are glowing, infected nodes located on the tentacles of a corrupted Angel Comb Jelly. Until they are destroyed, the structure itself remains sealed.
Take the Sonic Resonator. Follow the large tentacles extending from the Angel Comb Jelly. Look for chambers with glowing blue blight growths. Charge the Sonic Resonator and fire at each growth. Destroy all the blight growths in both chambers.
Return to the central Angel Crest and do the same. The blight flowers near the Angel Crest will only bloom after you destroy the others.
How to unlock the Axumite Sight
Aksumite Vision unlocks significantly later, after advancing toward the Tadpole Depot and the Alien Ruins. This adaptation requires a Reflected Wave Resonator, as a standard Sonic Resonator won’t be able to penetrate the shielded plague growths (they simply close when approached, requiring long-range fire).
Complete the mission related to the Tadpole Depot. Reach the Alien Ruins, where the research center is also located. Travel far east, towards the area with the Angel Comb Jelly (get the coordinates from NoA).
For long-distance travel, build or use the Tadpole bathyscaphe. If necessary, install a Tadpole depth module.
To obtain the “Axumite Vision” adaptation in Subnautica 2, find the Angel Crest located far beyond the Alien Ruins. A Reflected Wave Resonator is required to clear the infested area, as a standard tool cannot destroy protected blight growths.
After arriving at the Ctenophora, begin exploring the surrounding tunnels, following the purple tentacles—they lead to all the infested areas. First, move west from the plant along the huge root. At the first fork, turn left and destroy two blight flowers. Then return and continue west until you reach a cave. Inside are two more shielded growths, which must also be destroyed using the Reflected Wave Resonator.
After clearing the western section, return to the Angel Comb Jelly and head northeast to the green pool. Climb up and carefully examine the Firefly’s wreckage. There’s an open hatch at the bottom of the hull that allows access. Explore the sunken compartment—it connects to another hidden cave containing the remaining plague formations.
Destroy all protected plague growths, then return to the purified Angel Comb Jelly and interact with it. As a reward, the hero will receive the “Axumite Vision” adaptation, allowing him to see hidden objects and anomalies related to Axumite technology.
How to create a reflected wave resonator
The Reflected Wave Resonator is an improved version of the Sonic Resonator. It’s needed because the final Angel Comb Jelly with Axumite Sight is protected by special plague growths. When approached, they close, rendering a regular Sonic Resonator useless.
Fragment 1
- Where to find : Cicada wreckage, therapy bay.
- Route : Follow the signal from Singh’s black box, which you receive from the NoA terminal.
Fragment 2
- Where to find : Metal extractors.
- Directions : Look near the wreckage in the Metal Extractors area, approximately 2100 meters east-southeast of the escape pod.
Unlike a standard Sonic Resonator, this upgrade can destroy shielded growths that block the Axumite Vision adaptation. The Reflected Wave Resonator is crafted at a modification station, so gather all the necessary materials before heading east from the Alien Ruins.
Materials for crafting :
- Sound resonator – 1.
- Enameled glass – 2.
- Conducting crystal – 2.
- Strontium – 2.
Cleansing an Angel Comb Jelly is usually more dangerous than simply searching for the structure itself. Infested routes can have poor visibility, hostile creatures, and oxygen shortages.
Take a Sonic Resonator for regular Blight Warts. For shielded Blight Warts, a Reflected Wave Resonator is needed. Upgrade your oxygen tanks before clearing infested areas. Bring an air bladder or other item to replenish your oxygen supply on long routes. Have first aid kits ready.
If a large predator is patrolling the central chamber , use a distraction bomb. Use the Builder tool to cut off oxygen vents blocked by plague juice.
