Equipment and design

The EPOMAKER G84 PRO comes packaged in a cardboard box featuring a picture of the model and a list of its features: three-mode connectivity, customizable RGB lighting, translucent keycaps, and more.

The keyboard is secured inside with cardboard spacers to protect the case from damage during transportation. The package includes a USB-A to USB-C cable for wired connection and charging, a pair of spare switches, and a double-sided keycap and keycap puller. A USB dongle for wireless connection is hidden inside the keyboard case, under one of the feet.

The EPOMAKER G84 PRO features a crisp white case made of smooth ABS plastic, raised at the rear and tapered toward the front. Fold-out feet at the base of the case allow for additional elevation at the rear.

The device’s form factor is 80% compact; the keyboard lacks a numpad and some auxiliary keys. However, a fairly large display is located in the upper right corner of the case, and next to it, on the right edge, is a volume control wheel that also functions as a button. The rear edge of the device houses a USB-C port and a pair of switches—one for Windows/Mac mode and one for wired or wireless connection.

The keyboard has a classic keycap design, with the bottom of the keycap flush with the body. This typically compromises the visibility of the backlight , but not the case with the EPOMAKER G84 PRO, which features translucent silicone keycaps that diffuse and reflect the light from the LEDs in the switches.

Additionally, the keycaps feel more pleasant to the touch than their plastic counterparts: velvety smooth but not slippery, the material is pliable but not overly so. As a result, typing on this keyboard is a delight. The keycaps are Cherry-colored, a common and comfortable keycap. The characters are printed on a backing beneath the translucent top of the keycap, so they are resistant to wear, but they do have a slightly blurry appearance. However, this doesn’t cause any issues during use.

Connection and setup

The EPOMAKER G84 PRO supports three connection modes: wired USB, wireless 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth. It’s worth noting that USB or 2.4 GHz wireless connections are recommended for gaming, as they offer a 1000 Hz polling rate and a 2-5 ms response time. When connected via Bluetooth, the polling rate drops to 125 Hz and the response time increases to 11 ms, which can impact the device’s responsiveness—critical, for example, in online shooters , where reaction time and data transfer speed determine a character’s survival.

Out of the box, the user has access to some commands that can be accessed via Fn key combinations: music player control, system app launching, keyboard reset, and so on. To access advanced options, you need to open the web driver, available at this link .

The software is translated into Russian and contains several tabs where you can reassign keys, customize backlighting effects, work with macros, activate special functions such as SOCD, upload an image or GIF animation to the TFT display , and update the device’s firmware.

The app is very convenient and intuitive; it’s worth installing to customize your keyboard at least once, after which you can close the software and forget about it.

Impressions of use

The new product uses EPOMAKER Creamy Jade Switch mechanical linear switches with an actuation force of 45g and a final force of 50g, with a 2.0mm actuation travel and a full travel of 3.6mm. Hot-swappable, the included switches can be replaced with any compatible ones without soldering.

To ensure excellent sound quality, five layers of sound-absorbing materials are used, including a silicone bottom layer, PORON sandwich foam, and sound-insulating pads. The result is a soft, creamy sound, free of unwanted overtones and extraneous noise. It’s even one of the best-sounding models we’ve tested.

In standard mode, the TFT display shows the current date and time, the device’s battery level, and connection status. It can be loaded with a custom image or animation. Additionally, by pressing the Fn key and the volume wheel, the volume wheel can be used to control the RGB lighting and other options.

The built-in 8000 mAh battery provides the EPOMAKER G84 PRO with about 42 hours of battery life with the backlight and display turned on, 45 hours of operation if only the backlight is on, 150 hours with the display activated without backlight, and 200 hours if the backlight and screen are turned off.

In practice, when connecting the keyboard via a 2.4 GHz radio channel and with the backlight turned off and the display on, battery life was more than 10 days with intensive use of the device – more than 10 hours per day.

Conclusion

The EPOMAKER G84 PRO keyboard isn’t just a stunning design; it’s also a highly comfortable device for work and play. It boasts an attractive design, soft-touch keycaps, bright backlighting, an informative display, and excellent sound. Hot-swappable switches allow you to customize your typing experience, and the web app lets you customize the keyboard’s functions to suit your preferences.

The model has minimal drawbacks, but some users may dislike the silicone keycaps. However, you can always purchase a set of plastic keycaps and install them on the keyboard.

Ultimately, the EPOMAKER G84 PRO is an excellent choice for any use case. It’s definitely worth considering, but the decision is yours alone.
