Enemy bases in Nioh 3 are generally easy to take, but some require the player to fulfill additional conditions. The base at Mikatagahara Shrine on Hamamatsu Hill is a prime example: its main gate is locked and impossible to bypass. To get inside, you’ll have to make a long detour north and help an NPC with her clan’s affairs.
To open this base, you’ll need the Mountain Temple Key. This item is a reward for completing the quest “Land of Fate .” To start it, you need to speak with Ii Naotora in the main tower of Hamamatsu Castle (if you haven’t already).
During the “Land of Fate” quest, you’ll be tasked with clearing a northern temple belonging to the Ii clan of yokai . It’s a linear but somewhat challenging level. Despite the abundance of enemies, Naotora will fight alongside you throughout the quest (you can also call on other players for assistance).
After completing the quest, return to Naotora at Hamamatsu Castle. She’ll ask for one more favor: clear out the enemy base on Hamamatsu Hill. Before leaving, she’ll give you the Mountain Temple Key, which will finally unlock access to the base.
Inside the base at Mikatagahara Shrine, five yokai await you. Most of them are skeletons, lurking in ambush. If you don’t see the skeletons, try interacting with the collectibles around you—this may provoke them. The final enemy is a Ninja Yokai, who will appear in a bed of red spider lilies in the center of the shrine complex.
After defeating all the yokai, ascend to the pagoda at the top of the area. There, you’ll face a samurai avenger (revenant). This enemy is fairly predictable, and if you’re not too greedy with your attacks, you can defeat him without much trouble.
Remember that weapons in Nioh 3 have skills that deal significant Ki damage, allow you to instantly move behind an enemy, or break through defenses. Use these when fighting people who constantly block. Ninjutsu and elemental attacks are also effective against blocks.
