Where to find Thorium in Hytale

Thorium is one of two intermediate ore types in Hytale , which players can mine mid-game. It’s a step up from regular copper and iron, and while thorium gear is superior in almost every way, it’s slightly more difficult to craft due to the nature of the ore itself.

Players can easily find large amounts of thorium in Hytale, but only if they know where to go and what to look for. This guide covers the best ways to mine thorium and offers some tips to make the process easier.

Thorium location in Hytale

Thorium can be found by searching for desert biomes on the map . Each world in Hytale’s exploration mode is procedurally generated, so pinpointing exact coordinates is difficult. In our case, the large desert was located south of the starting zone.

Once you reach the desert biome, look for caves leading underground . Some caves are shallower than others, and some go straight underground. You’ll find thorium veins throughout the dungeon, similar to how you find copper or iron.

The underground caves in the desert are more dangerous than those in the starting grasslands . There’s a greater variety of enemies, including frequent appearances of goblins, desert skeletons, and scaraks—large underground insects that can easily catch you off guard. If they attack suddenly, they can knock you off a ledge.

As for thorium production, savannas seem unsuitable. Be sure to explore caves deep in the desert.

Tips for Underground Exploration and Mining

  • Before descending underground, always take a large stack of torches, ladders, and several signs with you . This will help you navigate the caves and leave traces that will make future visits easier.
  • Take one or two buckets of water . They can be used to create water elevators, which are very useful for moving up and down chasms.
  • Crouching prevents you from accidentally falling off ledges . This can be used to carefully build bridges across large gaps.

What is thorium used for?

At the time of writing, thorium is primarily used for crafting gear and upgrading workbenches in Hytale. It’s typically combined with poison glands, a material dropped by poisonous monsters such as snakes, spiders, and large flying insects found in desert biomes.

Thorium ingots are also used to craft keys needed for Ancient Gates, which open portals to various areas of Orbis (though these aren’t fully implemented in the Early Access version of the game).
