Voidtrain Review – Not an Empty Void

Voidtrain is, to put it mildly, an atypical survival game, one that, in a sense, challenges our perception of the world. The game is unlike most other games in the genre. Instead of fantasy or sci-fi worlds, you, alone or with friends, are immersed in a strange space that exists by its own rules and laws. Rails hang suspended in the void, and your only guide is moving forward along them. And it is through the path, through routine actions like crafting and resource gathering, that intriguing mechanics emerge, tense encounters occur, and a gradually unfolding story unfolds.

The world’s narrative unfolds in increments throughout the adventure, and at first, you’ll only have a general overview: an experiment at a secret research facility goes awry, and the character finds themselves drawn into the void. Understanding its nature will be difficult at first, as chaos and unpredictability reign. However, this opportunity will be provided through short cutscenes, recordings, and simply observing the constantly changing environment.

The central element of your journey will be the train . Initially, it’s a small handcar, but through your efforts, it will eventually become a fully-fledged mobile base. The entire gameplay is built around the train. You craft equipment on it, process materials, cook food, store supplies, and mount weapons.

The train can and should be expanded, and each new train car is part of your overall progress, opening up more freedom in exploration and resource management. In this regard, Voidtrain is similar to standard survival games, but the “house” here is not static but constantly moving, making the gameplay feel more focused, less tied to haphazard wandering.

These same resources are usually located near your train, so you won’t have to search for them for long. You literally float in the void next to your train, collecting metals, wood, chemical components, and rarer materials. And you don’t have to waste hours wandering around looking for missing items. Everything is right there, so the player’s primary task is to organize storage and carefully plan the processing of materials.

Over time, you’ll even be able to automate some of the processes. If you’re playing solo, it’s convenient and takes some of the tedium out of the game. Progression in the game is very well-implemented and smooth. At first, you do everything manually, then you start using stations, and then advanced tools appear, including research and complex train upgrade schemes.

Periodically, as the player advances along the rails, they will encounter stations. These are unique biomes with specific objectives and their own atmosphere. These stops will feature small dungeons , closed areas, story-driven objects, and, of course, combat sequences.

The combat system is responsive and delivers a satisfying weight to every shot. The weapons feel real in your hands, and enemies don’t let you relax—they attack with ferocity and intensity. You’ll have to learn to think several steps ahead and handle every bullet carefully. However, over time, as your arsenal grows with more serious weapons and the train gets turrets, you’ll be able to afford to ignore minor skirmishes. But at the start, be prepared to sweat.

As you travel, unusual companions will begin to appear on board—creatures from the void, willing to take on some of the chores. These creatures collect scattered items, maintain stations, and, if treated properly, even bestow useful bonuses and help out in battles.

With each new car, the train gains functionality, transforming into a true mobile base with its own small ecosystem—a well-coordinated mechanism where every element finds its place. And what’s especially pleasing is that the progression is organic, without artificial delays. The journey from primitive workbenches to a comprehensive infrastructure won’t require hundreds of hours of screen time.

For me personally, the most captivating aspect of Voidtrain was exploring the world and interacting with its mysteries. The Void here is anything but empty—it’s teeming with strange structures, dilapidated ruins, bizarre objects, hidden nooks, and plot hooks. Grappling devices allow you to peer into hidden corners in search of rare resources, forgotten weapons, or fragments of this world’s history.

It’s clear that the game is designed for co-op play. Teamwork makes it easier to delegate responsibilities, build your lineup more effectively, and handle firefights more effectively. However, the developers have provided a rich set of difficulty settings: you can make enemies less accurate or aggressive, reduce their numbers, or increase the amount of resources you can obtain. The game doesn’t automatically adjust for solo play, but it does provide all the tools for manual balancing—for both solo and co-op .

Voidtrain’s main drawback is its somewhat linear nature. The transitions between stations follow a set pattern, biomes alternate in a strict sequence, and the route cannot be changed. This doesn’t detract from the gameplay, but at times it feels like you’re being held on a rather tight leash in this survival game. And gathering resources alone can sometimes drag on. Although, to be honest, I personally don’t find this bothersome at all.

Voidtrain seamlessly blends survival , exploration, and gradual progression, building it all around a steady train rhythm. Your platform continually evolves, and the route unfolds consistently and logically. And yet, you never lose the feeling of a true journey —albeit through completely strange, almost surreal environments.

I’m confident the game will resonate with fans of survival games with a well-thought-out progression system and with those who enjoy immersing themselves in unusual worlds—even solo. This atmospheric, leisurely adventure is surprisingly skillfully crafted, and its cohesive concept will captivate genre enthusiasts for a long time.
