Where to find the Thunder Chip in Metroid Prime 4

Where to find the Thunder Chip in Metroid Prime 4

Metroid Prime 4 features three elemental shots, with the Thunder Shot being the final one players unlock. It not only allows players to bypass Thunder Blockers but also powers various inactive objects. Therefore, the Thunder Shot is crucial to progressing through the game, and this guide will show you how to obtain it.

For players looking to minimize spoilers, it’s enough to know that Thunder Shot cannot be obtained until the boss at the end of the Flashpoint Zone has been defeated.

What needs to be done in advance

Like other elemental shots, Thunder Shot is unlocked by collecting the corresponding chip. Before finding it, you must do the following:

  • Unlock Vi-O-La IC mode in the Voltaic Forge . This becomes possible after defeating Keratos in the Ice Belt and obtaining the Psi-Boost Orb.
  • Use Vi-O-La IC mode to cross the lava pool and reach the Flashpoint Zone facility . Complete this area and defeat Fenoros to obtain the Psi Hook .

After obtaining the Psi Hook, return to the Voltaic Forge and descend through Tower 1 to the Collapsed Catastrophe . On the game map, the area beyond this room will be marked as unexplored, making it easier to find.

Once you reach the Collapsed Catastrophe, use the Psi-Hook to cross the room. Then, simply follow the path to reach a room filled with Lamorna Energy Cells. On the west side of the room is a malfunctioning energy cell —scan its damaged cover and use the Hook Lasso to remove it. This will unlock a Thunder Chip ; interact with it to collect it.

Be prepared for a boss fight that will start in the room with the chip.

What to do with the Thunder Chip

After collecting the chip, head to Miles in the Furious Green , who will transform it into Thunder Shot. By this point, players will already be familiar with the process, having acquired Ice Shot and Fire Shot. Thunder Shot will automatically be assigned to the d-pad once unlocked.

The elemental lock puzzle in the Furious Green, which is a couple of rooms away from Miles, is a great opportunity to try out the new weapon.
