Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Guide – How to Find All Cake Pieces and Open the Talking Door

The new “Verso Sketches” location in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is both a wonderful and strange place, full of bright colors and sweets. Here you’ll encounter a talking gingerbread door that only opens if you bring it a birthday cake.

She doesn’t say this directly, instead expressing herself in a very cryptic manner. However, after she asks you to bring her a special ingredient, Verso begins to realize she’s actually looking for a birthday cake. That’s exactly what you’ll need to do if you want to open the door and discover what lies beyond. Below, we’ll tell you how to find all three cake pieces and get through the talking door.

How to get a birthday cake

Instead of searching for a ready-made birthday cake, you should receive pieces hidden throughout the location—three pieces that will automatically transform into a birthday cake once received.

The first piece of cake

One slice of cake can be obtained in the “Gestral Baths” zone, near the upper part of the region. You’ll know you’ve come to the right place when you see the giant silhouettes of orange Esquiers.

Near one of the pools, you’ll find a lifeguard with a lifebuoy around his neck. When he speaks to you, say “it’s you.” Afterward, the Under-Lifeguard will accuse you of making all the Esquiers too bright.

It’s unclear exactly why you’re at fault, but the situation needs to be rectified. Approach three of the six Esquiers in the Zhestral Baths and interact with them to turn each one blue. It doesn’t matter which Esquiers you choose: the main thing is that three of them end up red and three blue. Afterward, return to the Undersaver, and he’ll give you your first piece of cake.

The second piece of cake

To get the second piece of cake, go down to the pool with the wooden swings on the lower level of the Zhestral Baths, and then talk to the Zhestrals on the opposite side of the swings. There are three of them, and they’ll ask you to find a missing toy boat. Agree to help, saying you’re in on the deal.

Afterwards, they’ll tell you a story about one of their toy boats going missing and point you to a nearby waterfall where it floated down. Run up and jump off the edge of the waterfall to reach the river below. Then turn around, go through the waterfall, and find the toy boat. It doesn’t actually look like a boat—it’s a glowing pink object you need to pick up, just like other loot in the game. Once you’ve retrieved the item, return to the Gestrals and give it to them. You’ll receive a second piece of cake as a reward.

The third piece of cake

To get the final piece of cake, you need to find the carousel. It’s located on the opposite side of the region from the entry point. Without turning anywhere, head straight ahead and down the slope. You’ll soon see a large gray arch on the left—go through it to reach the carousel.

Once you’re in this area, examine the area to the right of the carousel—there you’ll find a small Gestral with Esquier’s head sticking out of its shoulder. This little guy is called the Really, Really Cool Gestral. Talk to him and confirm that standing in line is boring. The dialogue will then continue, and you’ll be asked to choose a character to ride the carousel.

To get the third piece of cake, you need to have all the characters ride the carousel one by one. They can only ride one at a time, in any order. So keep talking to the Very Very Cool Gestral and choose a different character to ride the carousel each time.

Once everyone has been on the carousel, you get the last piece of cake.

How to open a talking door

Once you have all the pieces of cake, you don’t even have to do anything: the birthday cake will form automatically.

With the cake in hand, you can open the door. It’s located one level below the Zhestral Baths area, or up the path from the Dreamwalk expedition flag.

Interact with the door and offer her a birthday cake. This will take you to a new area, “Unistode Station,” where you’ll find several regular enemies, loot, and a secret optional boss , Chroma the Unistep.
