Confidential Killings consists of several cases, each of which takes the protagonist to a new location, be it an expensive mansion, a dance floor, or a radio station studio where a daring murder took place.

The screens are static, and the characters don’t move, so there’s no need to worry about anyone escaping in the midst of the investigation. The player simply needs to carefully examine the surroundings, empty the pockets of witnesses, and collect all the clues that might lead to a solution.

Keyword underlines appear in item descriptions and notes. Clicking on them will add them to your notebook and allow you to use them later to piece together the story and identify characters.

The notebook is a kind of investigation board: on the right side are portraits of all the characters in the location, for whom you need to match their first and last names, and on the left side is the text of the final conclusion of the investigation, with blanks in which you need to fill in the correct words, such as the location of the crime, the murder weapon, the names of the victims and killers, and so on.

You’ll glean all the information you need from clues found at the crime scene, but while the game’s initial cases are easy to solve, later ones become more challenging—there are more characters, false leads that can confuse the detective, and plot lines that lead nowhere. Events are tightly intertwined, and keeping track of what’s happening can be quite challenging.

Confidential Killings doesn’t provide any clues; you must uncover the truth yourself, relying on your own deductive powers. While no one is stopping you from using the good old method of sequentially sorting through clues and names, this will take a long time, as each case can contain dozens of keywords and names, making such a brute-force approach significantly more difficult.

Ultimately, the title becomes a three- to four-hour entertainment. The crime scenes are engagingly presented, and the solutions are always logical. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the gameplay inevitably becomes monotonous, especially in the later stages, when the number of clues mounts and numerous facts and names need to be compared. For this reason, it’s recommended to play Confidential Killings in short sessions, completing one or two cases at a time, and be sure to take breaks, otherwise you risk getting bored and abandoning the investigation prematurely.

Pros
  • An interesting plot in the style of tabloid detectives
  • Nice drawing, referring to comics of the middle of the last century
  • Confusing but logical matters
Cons
  • Sometimes you have to rack your brain to get to the truth.
  • The gameplay gets boring over time
