The kit also includes a Wi-Fi antenna, a SATA cable, a front panel extension cable, an EZ Conn extension cable for connecting MSI cooling systems, an M.2 installation key, one EZ M.2 Clips II quick-release drive mount, and documentation consisting of a registration slip, instructions, and a welcome card.
Appearance

The MSI MAG B860 TOMAHAWK WIFI is an ATX motherboard measuring 304.8 x 243.84 mm. Its base features a 6-layer structure with increased copper content, improving heat dissipation and ensuring smooth signal transmission from high-speed interfaces . It features a matte gray finish, with striking accents including the series name and logo in green and various dots and dashes in glossy black. This is a distinctive design feature of the MAG series components.

Besides its rather striking appearance, the eye is also drawn to the five massive heatsinks, collectively known as Frozr Guard. Two of these are responsible for cooling the power supply, two more dissipate heat from the M.2 drives, and one reduces the chipset temperature.

As is traditional for MSI motherboards, the back of the device features white markers indicating possible mounting locations for extra spacers, which should be removed from the case before assembling the PC . Also visible here are the double electrical protection around the mounting holes, the reinforcing metal plate for the processor socket, and the screws securing some of the heatsinks.

The front panel, in turn, contains the LGA 1851 processor socket in the central section, designed for mounting 2nd-generation Intel Core Ultra processors. To the left and above it are a pair of heatsinks that cool the power supply area. One of them is oversized, expanding the heat dissipation area while covering the connectors on the back of the board. Both heatsinks are secured with screws from the rear and use 7 W/(m∙K) thermal conductivity pads as conductive materials.

The power supply system is a 12+1+1+1 design, with 12 phases powering the core, one for the graphics core, one for the system agent, and one for the VNNAON. This is complemented by dual connectors and a 60A power module for each core phase channel, ensuring stable power delivery even during processor overclocking.

To the left of the socket are four RAM slots , supporting DDR5 modules with a maximum bandwidth of 9200 MT/s in XMP overclocking mode. The total RAM capacity can reach up to 256 GB. To operate in dual-channel mode, install modules one at a time, starting from the right edge of the device. If you’re confused, there are simple and clear markings next to the slots with information on how to install the memory correctly.
Three M.2 drive slots are provided. The top slot has a dedicated heatsink with a quick-release mount, supports PCI-e 5.0, and receives lanes from the processor, making it the fastest. The two remaining slots are located next to each other at the bottom of the board and share a single heatsink with screw mounts on both sides. Both receive lanes from the chipset and support PCI-e 4.0.

Another heatsink is located on the upper right side, above the lower M.2 slots, and is secured with screws on the back of the board. It conceals the chipset, and like the other heatsinks, it uses a thermal pad to improve heat dissipation.
The MSI MAG B860 TOMAHAWK WIFI is equipped with three PCI-e slots, one of which is a PCI-e Gen5 slot receiving 16 lanes from the processor, while the remaining two are PCI-e Gen4 slots receiving one and four lanes from the chipset. The first slot is positioned higher than the others and features a Steel Armor II metal frame to protect against interference and reinforce the overall design. Designed to accommodate a graphics card , this slot features an EZ PCIe Release mechanism with a button located near the RAM area for easy removal. By pressing this button, you can remove the graphics card without having to reach underneath to release the latch. The remaining two slots are located above and below the lower M.2 drive slots. These slots lack the metal protection and EZ PCIe Release mechanism.
Power is supplied to the board using a 24+8+8 design. The main 24-pin ATX connector is positioned as standard on the right, while the two 8-pin ATX12V connectors have been shifted from the upper left corner closer to the right, to the area above the RAM. This makes them easier to connect cables, especially if you plan to use liquid cooling with a top-mounted radiator. Another 8-pin PCIE_PWR1 connector is located under the lower PCI-e slot. It ensures stable power delivery to all PCI-e devices.

Returning to the top side of the board, we find the 4-pin SYS_FAN2 connector in the upper left corner for connecting case fans. Another 4-pin connector, SYS_FAN3, is located below and to the left of the processor socket. It is also used for connecting case fans.

In the upper right corner there is a pair of 4-pin connectors CPU_PWR1 and PUMP_SYS1 for connecting the processor cooler and the liquid cooling system pump, respectively.

From top to bottom on the right side there is a 4-pin SYS_FAN1 for case fans , 4-pin JRGB2 and 3-pin JARGB_V2_3 for lighting , as well as 4 EZ DEBUG LEDs for indicating errors in specific components.

Following the previously mentioned ATX 24-pin are JUSB_C1 and JUSB_3 for the USB-C and USB-A ports on the front panel.

Below that are four SATA connectors for storage devices and another 4-pin SYS_FAN5 for case coolers.

The bottom side contains:
- JBAT1 – BIOS reset jumper;
- JFP1 and JFP2 for front panel indicators and buttons;
- JCI1 – case opening sensor;
- JPTM1 – TRM module connector;
- JARGB_V2_2, JARGB_V2_1 – for backlight ;
- JDP1 – service connector
- SYS_FAN4 – for case cooler;
- EZ Conn (JAF_1) – a proprietary connector that connects power and backlight cables for coolers;
- JUSB1 and JSUB2 – for connecting USB-A 2.0 on the front panel;
- JDASH1 – Tuning Controller connector;
- JTBT5_1 – connector for connecting a Thunderbolt 5 expansion card;
- JBD1 – purpose not specified;
- JPD1 – purpose not specified;
- JRGB1 – for backlight;
- JAUD1 – for connecting audio on the front panel.

The lower left corner, separated by a yellow stripe, represents the sound system, which is represented by high-quality Japanese capacitors, a headphone amplifier , and a Realtek ALC897 codec for 7.1-channel sound reproduction.

All this is complemented by an Intel Killer E5000B network controller for 5 Gbps internet connection and an Intel Killer BE1750x wireless module with support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. This combination underlines the board’s gaming credentials, as it not only provides a high-speed connection but also ensures stability when using both modes simultaneously thanks to intelligent network analysis.

The rear panel is equipped with a wide range of ports, which are already protected by a metal panel out of the box. These include:

Testing
Connecting the MSI MAG B860 TOMAHAWK WIFI board is straightforward and doesn’t present any complications, so you can start using the device immediately after assembling your PC.
To verify functionality, we’ll run a series of tests, and we’ll do them twice. First, with base performance settings, and then in the overclocked MSI Performance mode. The scores are slightly higher in the second test, indicating that overclocking is indeed working, and we accomplished it with just a couple of clicks in the BIOS. It’s worth noting that you can achieve even better results using the MSI Extreme or MSI Unlimited modes, but proceed with caution.
The next stage of testing is evaluating the RAM speed. My setup includes two 16GB XPG Lancer Blade DDR5-6000 RGB memory modules with a base frequency of 4800 MHz and an overclocked frequency of 6000 MHz, which we again performed via the BIOS using the XMP1 profile. The XMP tool automatically evaluates memory performance and increases its frequency after first testing for errors. This process results in optimal settings that maximize RAM performance without the risk of crashing. The screenshots above show the results for both base and overclocked modes, confirming the board’s ability to boost RAM performance. Again, to do this, you’ll need to enter the BIOS and enable the XMP profile. In our case, we were only able to raise the frequency to 6000 MHz, as this is the maximum value of the RAM used. However, the board supports modules up to 9200 MHz, which means the performance level can increase by another third.
The final stage of testing was measuring the XPG Gammix S70 Blade’s drive speed . The results matched the specifications, meaning the board didn’t throttle the SSD’s performance . Temperatures remained within acceptable limits, confirming the effectiveness of the included heatsinks.
