Hytale offers detailed avatar customization, allowing players to create a unique character or embody their own image in a blocky world. The appearance customization system uses a 64x tile style, allowing for greater detail than in classic Minecraft. One of the game’s first mods already offers a return to a 32x aesthetic, but the basic customization tools are flexible enough for most players.
Accessing the character customization menu

When you first launch the game, you’ll be assigned a default skin—usually a female character with curly hair wearing an adventurer outfit. However, Hytale doesn’t offer the option to create a custom character before starting the game, so you’ll have to return to the main menu to edit your appearance.
If you’ve already started a playthrough, don’t worry – creating a new appearance won’t reset your progress. Simply press ESC to return to the main menu. Autosave will lock your current position and world state. In the main menu, select “My Avatar,” which opens a full range of appearance-changing tools.
Lack of gender binding

Hytale doesn’t offer a choice between male and female characters. The game doesn’t offer binary “boy” or “girl” options, nor does it differentiate body types by gender. Instead, players can freely style their avatars with any combination of clothing, hairstyles, and facial features .
This approach means that all customization elements are grouped into general categories, rather than being separated into traditionally masculine or feminine categories. The hairstyle list includes all options at once, requiring more scrolling to find the desired style.
The clothing selection is currently limited, but includes pants, jeans, shorts, skirts, and dresses. Full armor sets conceal the base outfit while exploring the world, but personalized styles beneath the armor add character individuality.
Skin tone customization
Changing your skin tone is available in the My Avatar section of the main menu. In the second tab, “Body,” select the second sub-tab on the right—Body Characteristics. This section allows you to switch between a normal and muscular build and offers over three dozen skin tone options.
Activating pre-order bonuses

Pre-order bonuses from the Standard, Supporter, and Cursebreaker editions—including the New Beginning and Blazen Wizard Capes—can be found in the final tab of the customization menu. Each cape can be recolored and its neck and shoulder decorations can be customized, adding additional personalization options for early backers.
