Fishing is common in open worlds with crafting, and Hytale is no exception. However, fishing here is very different from the familiar mechanics of Minecraft or Stardew Valley.
There are no fishing rods or fishing-related minigames in the game. However, it is possible to catch fish in the world of Hytale. In this guide, we’ll explain in detail how to do so and what to do with your catch.

What do you need for fishing?
Instead of fishing rods, the game uses Fishing Traps .
To craft them, you ‘ll first need a Farmer’s Workbench . This may seem strange, but it’s true. You can craft a Farmer’s Workbench on a regular workbench using the following materials:
- 6 any logs
- 20 plant fibers
After that, you’ll need to upgrade your Farmer’s Workbench to level 2 to gain access to trap crafting. To upgrade, you’ll need:

- 5 wheat
- 5 lettuce
- 5 softwood logs (beech, aspen, banyan)
You can now craft a Fishing Trap using the following materials:
- 10 any wood
- 50 Essences of Life

How to catch fish
With your trap and bait, you’re ready to fish. Equip the trap, find the ocean or pond, and place the device on the surface of the water by right-clicking.
Then , take the bait and right-click the trap to place it inside. Now all that’s left is to wait for the trap to spawn. This may take a while, but the bait speeds up the process.
Once the fish is caught, approach the trap and press the ‘F’ key to collect the catch.
