Amazing Digital Circus takes place in a virtual world where a group of people from reality are trapped. Those trapped here don’t need food or sleep, and physical injury doesn’t kill them. However, if a person goes mad, they will be “abstracted” and turn into a dangerous monster.
Usually, an AI named Cain maintains the morale of his subjects by creating various games that distract them from reality. But this time, he decides to do nothing. Cain provides the heroes with a beach where they can sunbathe, fish, and enjoy life.
Yes, this is a popular “beach episode” among screenwriters—it’s convenient because the writers don’t have to worry about a complex plot. The advantage of such episodes is that viewers get to see the characters in swimsuits and observe their everyday lives. It’s also a great way to lighten the mood and mentally prepare for the coming storm.
But this time, the storm began prematurely. A character named Abel suddenly appears, knowing far more than anyone else. He claims to have found a loophole in the system that will allow them to escape from prison. The source of the information is untrustworthy, but if they take the risk, the prisoners will have a chance to escape.
To overcome this new challenge, the heroes use the knowledge they gained in previous episodes. They “break” the physics of the virtual world to reach previously inaccessible locations. Their personalities are also cleverly utilized: Jax, who is prone to thievery, used his impressive collection of keys to open doors, and Memento, who is good with people, maintained team spirit.
Cain proved to be the main obstacle. Until this point, the AI, though insane, was a protector. The people of the Digital Circus are incapable of death, but in their research they might find a way to harm themselves. At such moments, the master of ceremonies intervenes and eliminates the threat. From a pessimistic perspective, the situation is reminiscent of science fiction writer Harlan Ellison’s short story “I Have No Mouth, But I Must Scream.”
The heroes can’t be entirely sure that their protector will respond positively to their escape attempt. Cain has proven himself to be a selfish individual, dependent on human attention. If he gets angry, it will be disastrous—the AI is capable of manipulating reality and even people’s memories. He only needs to snap his fingers to destroy all hope for the escapees.
The only way to confront such a monster is by manipulating his ego. Praising Cain and assuring him that he’s doing everything right will overwhelm him with emotion. The only unknown is how long flattery will hold him back—the heroes will have to hurry while their comrades distract the master of ceremonies.
The situation is further escalated by the threat of abstraction. The hope of salvation makes people more vulnerable, potentially turning them into monsters at any moment—which is precisely what happened in the first episode. Viewers were even shown how those close to transformation see the world: full of surreal images and vibrant colors.

Episode seven seriously upped the ante. In it, the creators explored numerous fan theories about the nature of the Digital Circus and the people behind its creation. The characters were brought to the point of no return: they would either gain freedom or be left with nothing.
