An Ancient Rift is a gateway to other worlds with unique quests and objectives in Hytale . It’s a great opportunity to explore entirely new locations and gather fresh resources. However, Ancient Rift worlds can only be explored for a few minutes at a time, so you’ll need to act quickly to find the treasures hidden within.
But first, you’ll need to craft the Ancient Portal itself and some fragments to travel to these unique worlds. So, without further ado, here’s how to get and use the Ancient Portal in Hytale , as well as the worlds it can open.
How to get an Ancient Portal in Hytale
The Ancient Portal is a gateway that can be crafted at the Arcanist’s Workbench in Hytale , but only after you’ve unlocked its recipe.

The Ancient Portal recipe is unlocked by collecting at least 100 Memories . These Memories are collected by encountering new creatures and plants. The more you collect, the more recipes you’ll unlock.
To start collecting Memories and view the ones you already have, you need to visit the Forgotten Temple . To do this, look for the vortex icon on the map and go through the blue portal at the bottom of the ruins. This will take you to the Forgotten Temple, where there’s a statue in the center of the area that you can interact with. Doing so will reveal all the Memories you’ve already unlocked and those you’ve yet to find.

To collect Memories, visit the Forgotten Temple and interact with the statue in the center of the area.

Interact with the statue in the Forgotten Temple to see which Memories you have unlocked and which you haven’t.
Once you unlock 100 Memories, the Ancient Portal recipe will become available at your Arcanist’s Workbench. To craft it, you’ll need the following:
- 10x Void Essence – Dropped from Void enemies.
- 10x Life Essence – Obtained from harvest.
- 10x Thorium Ingot – smelted from Thorium Ore.
- 30x Cobblestone
Now that you can finally create an Ancient Portal, let’s talk about how to use this mysterious passage.
How to use the Ancient Portal in Hytale
The Ancient Portal in Hytale allows you to use Fragments (another craftable item at the Arcanist’s Workbench) to visit another world for a limited time (usually a few minutes). During this time, you should scour the area to gather whatever loot you can before being pulled back.
These special Fragments you’ll visit can contain interesting structures and resources, and sometimes even new creatures, so they’re definitely worth visiting if you have the opportunity (and the materials!). Each craftable Fragment is also associated with its own unique area.

All Ancient Portal Fragments in Hytale
All known Ancient Portal Fragments, their crafting recipes, and destinations are as follows:
| Title of the fragment | Recipe for a fragment | Description of the fragment |
|---|---|---|
| Dragonspire Weald | 10x Cobalt Bar 30x Essence of Ice |
Forest taiga biome. 7 minutes to explore. Here you can find the Ice Dragon, “condemned to eternal sleep.” |
| Dread Wade | 10x Adamantite Bar 30x Essence of Fire |
A desert swamp biome. 7 minutes to explore (3 minutes during a Void Breach ). “Muddy shallows, home to dangerous fauna.” “A voracious threat lurks in the swamp.” |
| Windrider Valley | 10x Thorium Ingot 30x Life Essence |
A sandy oasis biome. 6 minutes to explore. Magic Towers can be found here. |
Of the three mentioned fragments, I personally found Windrider Valley the most profitable. I was lucky enough to find two towers full of skeletons and chests, allowing me to quickly replenish my supplies of various ores, seeds, tools, and weapons.
Dragonspire Weald was quite interesting to explore, but aside from a sleeping Ice Dragon, I found nothing of note. There’s no known way to awaken it, and it’s impossible to attack. Finally, Dread Wade proved the least productive: these swamps are covered in crocodiles and desert lands, and there’s nothing else there, though there are a few chests for keen explorers.
There are two more fragments in Hytale – Silent Henges and Tal’Kesi Refuge – but they are currently only available in Creative Mode and cannot be crafted in Adventure Mode.
If you’d like to try out these two fragments in Creative Mode, here are the areas they’ll take you to:
- Silent Henges is a snowy glacial biome filled with small outposts containing chests. Exploration time: 5 minutes.
- Tal’Kesi Refuge is a barren sand dune landscape based on Orbis’s Zone 4. Exploration time: 12 minutes.
That’s all about the Ancient Portal!
