Blizzard has heard the persistent requests of fans: the Paladin class will appear in Diablo 4 in 2026. This moment has been long awaited—the holy warrior was last available in Diablo 2, which, for those keeping track, was over 25 years ago. With the release of the Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred expansion, which explores Mephisto’s growing threat in Sanctuary, the return of the world’s last beacon of divine power seems logical.
Naturally, much has changed in the last 25 years—both in the action-RPG genre and in the Diablo franchise—so Blizzard promises that the Paladin in Diablo 4 will be a mix of new and nostalgic elements. Below, you’ll find everything we know so far about the new class, including its place in the story and how it could change some of the game’s fundamentals.
Like the Diablo 2 version (not to mention the Crusader that later appeared in Diablo 3), the Paladin in the Lord of Hatred expansion will be a character imbued with the power of faith who will answer the call to action as Mephisto’s corruption spreads across the land.
For those unfamiliar with Diablo lore, the Paladin is the quintessential holy warrior, a champion with sword and shield, capable of withstanding damage and dealing it back with ease. The Paladin wields classic medieval weapons, transforming them with celestial power into sacred instruments capable of inflicting devastating damage. These include sacred hammers and the ability to transform into the powerful form of the Arbiter—a radiant avatar of destruction inspired by Tyrael.
Clearly, there are still many skills, weapons, and upgrades to learn about. But it’s worth noting how different the Paladin class is from others currently available in Diablo 4.
This class relies entirely on divine power, meaning iconic elements from the class’s past, such as Auras and Holy Spells , will be key to direct combat. These will be combined with new angelic transformations that can be devastating over a wide area.
The Holy damage type will return to the game , creating a clear identity for the Paladin class in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. With this damage type’s return, a variety of mechanics and attacks will be available to utilize it.
The Paladin class in the expansion will also honor the core elements of Diablo 2. Key favorites will return with new animations, sounds, and responsiveness, including:
Blizzard is also bringing back important skills from the Diablo 3 Crusader class, aiming to breathe new life into the returning Paladin. Two are currently known:
The Oath system also returns. This set of sacred paths allows Paladins to pursue various playstyles, offering freedom in build creation. You can create a divine agent capable of converting defensive capabilities into offensive strikes, or a character that better supports the needs of the group.
Juggernaut : This Oath path focuses on the Paladin’s shield. It will unlock unique core skills like Shield Bash and ultimates like Fortress , a defensive skill that makes you nearly invulnerable for a short time.
Zealot : This Oath path focuses on strengthening your melee attacks, fueled by the updated Zeal skill .
Zealot : This Oath path focuses on enhancing melee attacks, fueled by the updated Zeal skill . Its primary focus is on swords, making it an excellent choice for pure damage dealers, especially with its ultimate, Zenith , which unleashes a devastating celestial strike on enemies with a holy blade.
Judge : The Judge’s Oath Path focuses more on Holy spells and defensive abilities. Through the invocations of Blessed Shield , Blessed Hammer , Consecration , and Divine Fury, you’ll unlock new ways to attack enemies with Holy damage .
Disciple : The Disciple’s Oath path is built around angelic transformations. Whether it’s summoning the Spear of Heaven (a powerful spear attack) or spreading wings to form the Arbiter , the Disciple is sure to radically change the familiar rhythms of combat in Diablo 4.
The Paladin class will be coming to Diablo 4 as part of the upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion . This means you’ll have to wait until April 28, 2026, to try it out. Unless you pre-purchase the expansion, in which case the class will be available in-game immediately .
