The Complete Guide to Farming in Hytale: From Tools to Harvesting

In Hytale, players can grow crops to obtain useful cooking ingredients, valuable goods, and decorative items. While the farming process itself is relatively simple, it can be challenging for new players unfamiliar with the game’s mechanics.

This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to find suitable land, craft tools, plant seeds, fertilize the soil, and harvest crops in Hytale, detailing the entire process from start to finish.

How to get seeds in Hytale

To plant crops in Hytale, you’ll need seeds. There are two ways to obtain them: crafting them at the Farmer’s Workbench in the “Seeds” tab or finding them as loot in chests scattered throughout the world.

A level 1 farming workbench only allows you to craft wheat and cabbage seeds, so your first harvest will likely consist of these crops. As you upgrade your workbench, you’ll unlock new seed types.

How to collect water in Hytale

Before you start planting seeds, it’s best to first secure a water source. Find a lake, pond, or river anywhere in the world (water bodies are easy to spot on the map) and use your Wooden Bucket (right-click) on the water source to fill it with water .

Bring a bucket of water to your farm and dig a one-block-deep hole nearby. Pour the water from the bucket into the hole—this will create a convenient water source from which you can refill your watering can at any time.

An empty watering can requires refilling after every 20 uses.

How to plant crops in Hytale

Equip the Rough Hoe and use it to till the soil in the selected area by right-clicking. It can only till blocks that can grow crops, such as dirt or grass; it doesn’t work on stone or marble.

Once the plot is ready, equip the seeds of the desired crop and plant them in the tilled soil. Then, use the Empty Watering Can to water the newly planted crops—this will speed up their growth by 2.5 times.

If you have a Fertilizer Bag (crafted at a Level 3 Farming Workbench ), you can use fertilizer to further boost growth by 2x. One bag is enough to enrich five blocks of tilled soil.

Crops can grow without watering or fertilizer, but the time to maturity is significantly increased. Let’s take carrots as an example: the following table details how soil enrichment affects growth rate.

Carrot growth rate
Without water and without fertilizers 30 minutes
With water, without fertilizers 10 minutes
With water and fertilizers 5 minutes

How to Harvest in Hytale

Once a crop reaches maturity, players can harvest it by pressing the interact key (F) on the plant. Holding the interact key allows players to harvest multiple crop blocks with a single press.

Harvesting yields two things: the crop itself and Life Essence . For example, if you have a farm with 10 blocks of wheat, harvesting the entire ripened crop will yield 10 wheat and 10 Life Essence .

In very rare cases, you can get Eternal Seeds when harvesting.
