Where are my Stardew Valley save files located?

Want to secure your cozy farming progress, transfer it to another device, or simply figure out where the game stores all your achievements? You’ve probably asked yourself these questions. And the answer is actually quite simple. The game stores your farm files in a specific folder on your computer. Finding them couldn’t be easier; let’s take a look at how.

How do game saves work?

Where are my Stardew Valley save files located?

Each save file is essentially a small capsule containing your progress. And it has an important tag—the game version it was created in. It looks something like this: <gameVersion>1.6</gameVersion>. What does this mean for us, the players?

  1. A new version of the game, say, the same 1.7, will easily open and load your old save from version 1.6.
  2. If you update the game, make a save, and then suddenly want to roll back to an older patch, the save will no longer open.
  3. When transferring a file between devices (from mobile to PC, etc.), the game version on the receiving device must be no older than the one specified in the save file.

Your saves are stored as separate XML files, separate from the game files. This protects your progress during updates or reinstallations.

Each save slot has its own folder with a unique name, like BogLog_123456789. Look inside and you’ll see two main files. One is the save itself (e.g., BogLog_123456789), and the other is a service file called SaveGameInfo. They work together. For everything to load correctly, both files are needed.
