Winter Burrow is a survival simulator about a mouse who returns to his native forest and tries to restore order to a charming, albeit dangerous, world. We’ll give you a quick overview of the game.

The protagonist of Winter Burrow is a small mouse. He and his parents once left their native forest, but failed to thrive in their new surroundings, and the hard work in the mines drove his parents to their graves.

Deciding to return home, the protagonist discovers the shelter inside the old tree stump is empty, and the aunt who lived there has disappeared. He must figure out what’s happening and restore the home’s comfort and warmth.

Winter Burrow follows the ideas of popular survival simulators like Stardew Valley. You start small: first, build a bed and a workbench for tools, then clear out the basement, craft furniture, then sew yourself some clothes, and finally, you can set off on a journey to find your aunt.

As in many games of this genre, the gameplay systems are tightly intertwined . To craft planks, you need branches; to mine stone, you need to craft a pickaxe; to be able to undertake long forays, you’ll need to warm up well, stock up on food and hot tea, and prepare for encounters with enemies.

The game forces you to monitor your hunger and cold levels. While food is plentiful, without a warm jacket, you risk freezing to death if you don’t make it home in time. At first, you have to run close to home and constantly keep your return route in mind so you can quickly return when darkness falls. Over time, you become bolder, venture further, and even learn to make a fire in the wild.

Winter Burrow Review

Winter Burrow doesn’t make the mouse’s existence aimless. Sure, there’s constant progress: you gather resources, discover new recipes, fortify your burrow, and craft new items. But the game also regularly throws up quests, creating a sense of progression. The forest is populated by characters you can talk to, exchange opinions, and take on quests with. Moreover, the stories the project tells are sometimes far from childish , like the story of a mother trying to reconcile with the daughter she once rejected. Of course, there won’t be any deep philosophical deliberations, but neither will there be any completely childish scenarios with flowers and butterflies.

However, not all characters are kind to the protagonist. Fighting bugs and spiders isn’t particularly challenging, but getting into trouble isn’t recommended: your stamina bar drains quickly, and a group of several enemies can easily overwhelm the mouse. However, combat is optional, and engaging in conflict with the fauna is only worth it for the satisfying meat, which can be used to make reserves.

Winter Burrow Review

While Winter Burrow doesn’t bring anything radically new to the genre, it’s hard to put down. It’s a game that’s engaging in its own right, and even the story feels like a pleasant, if unnecessary, addition. If you’re looking for a survival game in the vein of Stardew Valley, Luma Island, and the like—predictable and as typical as possible—Winter Burrow is the game for you.
