Playing through Nioh 3 can be quite challenging, especially when you encounter a particularly challenging boss or find yourself on a mission teeming with powerful enemies. There are many ways to make these challenges easier, but perhaps the best way to overcome them is to play co-op, either with real players or their AI-controlled ghosts.
Nioh 3 becomes a completely different game when you play it with friends. You can even earn rewards for helping other players without physically being in their world. Here’s how to set up such multiplayer sessions.
There are two ways to play multiplayer in Nioh 3: you can either summon or become a Visitor, or join someone else’s world through Expeditions . Both options allow you to play with others, but their mechanics differ slightly.
In any case, you can start searching for a co-op game by approaching any Sanctuary and selecting the “Co-op” option . Here you can choose one of two multiplayer modes and set additional search parameters.
In Nioh 3, the Visitor search system allows you to either summon players to your location or go to the aid of someone calling you . Visitors are surrounded by a golden glow and can only be summoned while on a mission. Furthermore, they cannot open chests or interact with other objects.
To summon a Visitor, you’ll need Ochoco Cups, which can be found as loot in the world or earned as a reward by playing as a Visitor . At the end of a successful mission, you’ll receive additional rewards, including equipment, Fame, and Amrita. Becoming a Visitor is free.
Benevolent Graves are blue tombstone swords found throughout the world. They summon friendly NPCs to aid you in combat. You can place your own by obtaining and using Righteous Jaspers . You can obtain them by assisting other players as a Visitor, or by checking with the merchant Sudama in the Eternal Abyss to see if he sells them.
Expeditions mode works slightly differently than Visitor mode. Here, each player has greater freedom to interact with objects such as Shrines, chests, and collectibles . Downed players can respawn or be revived by other allies if killed in Expeditions mode . However, this will decrease the team’s Assistance meter, which acts as a kind of health bar. When the Assistance meter is depleted, the Expedition fails.
There are two types of Expeditions, each with its own rules and restrictions.
Story Mode is essentially a free-roaming mode where up to three players can roam freely throughout the host player’s world . They can loot chests and interact with collectibles like Kodama and Scampus, but any story progress is only counted for the host player (although allies can still assist them with story quests).
Mission mode is limited to completed main quests and unlocked side quests , such as “The Manifested Crucible,” where players fight Jakotsu Baba at the beginning of the story. Players can only create a lobby for an Expedition in Mission mode after the quest has become available to them. Similarly, you cannot join a lobby set up for a quest you don’t yet have access to.
Allies can only be healed once at Shrines.
In Expedition Mission mode, praying at Shrines does not revive enemies.
